The demand mask is designed to deliver gas only when the diver inhales, which means the diver must actively engage in breathing independently. When the diver takes a breath, the pressure differential opens a valve that allows gas to flow into the mask. This mode of operation requires the diver to have the ability to breathe spontaneously, making it essential for efficient use of this type of mask.

In contrast, the other options function differently. A venturi mask relies on the creation of a flow of gas to pull in air and mix with it, generally used for patients needing a specific concentration of oxygen. The nonrebreather mask has a reservoir bag that allows for a high concentration of oxygen to be delivered without the need for the diver to inhale independently.
